1.- Nick, tell us how, being sport so important for you, you decided to dedicate yourself to music.
Nick Newman : Although music was my first passion, at the age of around 13, sport has shaped much of my life until now. From moving to the US to play basketball - to transitioning to track & field after my first year in the US - to earning my degrees in sport science - to having a career in coaching, sport has dictated every decision I have made. I feel now that I have achieved the goals I set for myself when I started my coaching career. However, with music, so much remains to be achieved. If I am going reach my potential in the music world, it needs to my main focus.
2. Are you still involved in sport?
Nick Newman : Yes, very much. It is still my primary career. I coach collegiate track and field at UCLA in Los Angeles, California. It requires a lot of time and travel. I also have a new book entitled – “The Jumps: A Comprehensive Training System” which is a training science resource that will be released before the end of the year.
3. - How do you manage to combine training, production, playing in the clubs?
Nick Newman : It is not easy. I spend a lot of time making music and not enough time playing out. I am working on changing that. The house music scene in Los Angeles is quite a busy one so I hope to play a lot more frequently in the near future.
4.- Where do you get your inspiration when you produce?
Nick Newman: It is very easy for me. It comes naturally and I don’t have to think about it or search for it. I am a very sensitive and vigilant person. I sense a lot of emotion in others, those I don’t even know or have never met. My music is created with that in mind, almost always emotional, deep, and sensitive. I have songs for every feeling. I find a lot of electronic music to be relatively cold, almost soulless. Deep electronic music can touch the soul and that is what I strive to do.
5.- What is the style you feel most identified with?
Nick Newman: I feel my true style doesn’t quite fit with any already established genre. The style that resonates most with me is in the 117-120bpm range, it has the percussive elements and groove like organic, deep, and minimal house, and the emotional and melodic feelings associated with electronica and downtempo, as well as the atmosphere of ambient music. It also has a certain Lo-fi, abstract, and nostalgic feel to it. I just love that combination.
6.- How do you define your music?
Nick Newman: Probably as – Deep Immersive House.
7.- Adjective that best defines it.
Nick Newman: As I am often told it is “too deep” for the majority of labels, I would have to simply say “deep.”
8.- Do you find any notable differences between the productions of American and British artists?
Nick Newman: Perhaps British artists are a little more melancholy by nature and their music reflects that. I love that style.
9.- Do you prefer day or night events and why?
Nick Newman: Late afternoon/sunset events at the beach or in beautiful scenic areas of the world are perfect.
10.- What would you change in the electronic scene if you think there is something to change?
Nick Newman: Ticket prices are way too high for the majority of events. The environment is not nearly as inclusive as it could be in that sense.
11.-Projects in sight?
Nick Newman: So far, I have focused mainly on creating original music. Remixes and collaborations haven’t been a focus at all. I am currently working a several collaborations with some of my favorite producers. I would love to do a lot more of that throughout 2025 and behind.
12.- Dreams to realize?
Nick Newman: Travelling the world as a DJ. Playing the major events within my genre and having my music reach the biggest audience are my biggest goals at the moment.
13.- Dreams realized?
Nick Newman: In October 2024 I have a very special artist album that will be released on my favorite label! Creating the album has been my most worthwhile achievement and I am thrilled with how it turned out. The collection of songs are very personal to me. I cannot wait to share it with the world.
14.- IBR.We know you have new upcoming releases, tell us more about that…
Nick Newman.- I believe my best music is yet to be released. I have a brand new artist album called “Childhood” that will be released in November on Armen Miran’s label, Hoomidaas Records!
I can’t wait for that one!
The album was created over many months and derives from a host of childhood memories.
I believe it is my most beautiful collection of music to date and it means a lot to me.
