With this new phase in Roquetas de Mar, the Sunwaves Festival seeks to continue its legacy of offering an authentic and respectful musical experience, transporting its distinctive ‘vibe’ from the Black Sea to the Mediterranean Sea.

As for the stages, one of Sunwaves' most iconic features is its unique configuration. Over the course of more than 30 editions, it has featured a variety of stages, but always maintaining its distinctive aesthetic. The stages are usually minimalist structures that prioritise acoustics and proximity between the artist and the audience. They are often located directly on the beach, overlooking the sea, and their design blends in with the surroundings. The experience of dancing on the sand as the sun rises and illuminates the stage is a fundamental part of Sunwaves' identity.

This is not a festival with multiple themed or large stages, but rather one that focuses on creating an intimate atmosphere and immersion in the music, with sessions that can last for hours on the same stage.

The Sunwaves Festival: History, Essence and Its Debut in Roquetas de Mar

The Sunwaves Festival is much more than an electronic music event; it is a cultural phenomenon that has shaped a global community of techno and minimal lovers. With its origins on the Black Sea coast of Romania, the festival has earned a cult following thanks to its purist approach to music and its unique atmosphere.

History and Philosophy Sunwaves was born in 2007 in Mamaia, Romania, as an alternative to conventional festivals. Instead of offering flashy light shows, fireworks or mainstream music, the founders decided to focus on the essentials: music, high-quality sound and the creation of a community united by respect and passion for electronic rhythms. This vision, known as ‘rominimal’, was pioneering and became a hallmark of the festival, with marathon sessions, many of them at dawn, which are its personal trademark.

The festival is held twice a year in Romania: once in spring to welcome summer and once at the end of August to mark its end. At its core is the essence of the ‘never-ending party’, with programmes that can last up to 6 days and 6 nights without interruption. Sunwaves is also known for being the first to set a standard for sound quality with the use of Funktion-One systems, which are now preferred at many electronic music events in Romania.

Over the years, the festival has expanded its reach, bringing its experience to other parts of the world. In 2021, an edition was held in Zanzibar, Tanzania, and in 2023 in the United Arab Emirates, and with artists like  Joseph Capriati, Jamie Jones, Loco Dice, Seth Troxler, Paco Osuna, Carl Cox, The Martinez Brothers, Ricardo Villalobos, Pawsa, Dennis Cruz, Priku, Toman, Sosa, East End Dubs, Dan Andrei , Sonja Moonear...Its international success demonstrates the strength of its concept and the loyalty of its audience.

The Owners of the Festival

The Sunwaves Festival is a creation of the Romanian electronic music scene, with Ioan Borzea as its owner. Borzea has been a key figure in consolidating the festival and defending its philosophy, even responding publicly to controversies that have arisen over time. The festival organisers, including the well-known Kristal Club in Bucharest, have been instrumental in the growth of the local scene and the identity of Sunwaves.

As you can see, fun is guaranteed in an unbeatable setting where good vibes will reign throughout the festival in this wonderful enclave in southern Spain.
